At age 4, Alex Brown, of North East, not only suffered chemical burns from a button battery in his nasal cavity, but also experienced neurological and psychological damage because of a delay in diagnosis.
Now at the age of 11, Alex with the help of his mom, Stephanie Brown, wants to help make other parents and families aware of the dangers of button batteries. The Browns realized that there is information about swallowing these small batteries, but most people do not realize insertion of one into the body can do a lot of damage, too.
To help get the word out, Alex and his mother have started “Alex’s Crusade.”
The local nonprofit is now holding another Take Me Out to the Ball Game fundraiser.
Community members are invited to purchase discounted tickets for the Pittsburgh Pirates game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 1:35 p.m.
Cost is $35 for a ticket to the game and transportation to PNC park via a chartered bus. Game only tickets are also available for $10 apiece.
