Amid the many questions about the opening of schools and allowing students to compete in sports, the North East girls’ golf team was ready for its first mega match on Monday, Aug. 31.
North East is joined by Mercyhurst Prep, Villa Maria, Harborcreek, Fort LeBoeuf and Conneaut Lake in Region 2 competition. Each team has three to five girls that play, keeping the three best scores per team.
North East girls team consists of senior Taylor Urban; juniors, Lydia Swan and Ellie Seabolt; and two new freshmen, Anna Swan and Tatiana Liera.
The girls competed on the front nine at Lakeview Country Club.
North East’s girls team is led by junior Lydia Swan who is joined this year by sister Anna.
The duo carded 38s (one over par) and with senior teammate Urban’s 52, the girls clinched their first victory of the year with a low score of 128.
Tara Thomas of Villa finished third overall but it wasn’t quite enough for the second-place finish as both Mercyhurst and Villa scored 145 with Mercyhurst getting the second-place finish based on their fourth score.
“Anna and I have waited a long time to play together as a team,” Lydia Swan said. “It is fun to be out there with her, knowing that we can push each other to score low.”
The girls continue Region play Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Green Meadows Golf Course.
