PGA Junior League is a program designed to get kids interested in the game of golf via a fun team-like environment.
Junior golfers ages 7-14 competed all summer improving their skill and learning the rules while developing friendships along the way.
North East had two Junior league teams from both Green Meadows and Lakeview Country Club. With the regular season now over, an All-star team was selected from the seven teams in Erie County. Much like Little League, the goal of the All-star team is to advance to the “World Series” or in Junior League, the National Championship in Scottsdale, Arizona.
This year’s team had their first playoff match Aug. 12, at Glen Oak Golf Course in Amherst, N.Y., after clinching a spot in the match play by having the lowest preliminary team score of 107. The team faced off in match play against the Buffalo North team. In match play the first team to collect 6.5 flags wins and moves on to the Regional Championship.
The team started off strong winning three of the first four flags. It was smooth sailing from there. “All the kids played so well,” coach Troy Hassenplug said. “They worked amazing together to get this done. I’m extremely excited to get to the Regional and see them compete again.”
The team proceeded to win the match 10 to 2 to continue their quest at the Regional Championship to be held Sept. 4 and 5 at Westfield Country Club in Seville, Ohio.
