As a result of the concerns and requests of business owners and customers, North East Borough has removed the parking meters. The downside to this is that North East in Bloom’s parking meter baskets, which have been so beautiful throughout the downtown over the past decades, now have no posts on which to rest.
So, after much discussion and coordination with the Borough, North East in Bloom (NEIB) has decided on this first step to address flowers in the downtown during 2020.
The new light poles, which were installed in and around Gibson Park in 2017, will be home to 24 new hanging baskets. In addition, with the permission of the building owners and/or businesses, nine hanging baskets will be hung from the poles supporting the awning over the West Main Street sidewalk.
NEIB would like to thank the North East Community Foundation and the Hirtzel Memorial Foundation for the funds to purchase new hangers for the poles, as well as the plantings and the maintenance requirements.
Please note that the existing light poles throughout the downtown are not structurally sound enough to support hanging baskets. So, until these light poles are replaced, we cannot hang baskets on them.
In addition, concrete planters made by former NEIB member, Bruce Miller, will be located at key locations through the downtown to add colorful flowers. Permission is being requested from property owners for this effort. NEIB will plant and maintain the planters and Borough staff will transport the planters, and will be watering the planters and the baskets. We are sincerely thankful for the Borough’s assistance.
As we move forward, we are asking for suggestions as to how NEIB can add more flowers—hanging baskets, planters, etc., to the community. If you have suggestions, please email them to firstname.lastname@example.org.
NEIB is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization. If you would like to join us in beautifying North East, your efforts would be greatly appreciated; just email the above address and we will include you in our meetings and plans. If you prefer to donate funds to assist with our efforts, please send checks to NEIB at 44 W. Main St. or drop them off at the Chamber when they are open.
We hope that you are enjoying the beautiful display of daffodils near North East Glass on West Main Street—watch for the daylilies in the near future–and that you will again enjoy the rose garden at the entrance to Heard Park.
In addition, NEIB is maintaining the planted areas in Gibson Park, and assisted the Historical Society with the wraps on the electrical boxes.
We will be watching for your beautiful gardens again this year and selecting Gardens of the Month. We appreciate everyone’s efforts at beautifying our wonderful community.
