With the recent announcement by PIAA and local school districts to allow high school sports to begin, high school golf has officially started its season.
As coaches quickly scrambled to finalize their competition schedules and get qualifying rounds in, the North East boys golf team wasted no time getting into the swing of things.
The boys team competed in a tri-match with McDowell and Mercyhurst Prep at Lakeview Country Club on Thursday, Aug. 27.
The boys’ team will be led this year by seniors Carter Hassenplug and Isaiah Swan. Both boys have excelled in their high school golf careers and hope to help their team achieve another District 10 Title.
Senior Cole Lanahan and junior Ryan Hathaway also return to the links to work toward that same goal.
Sophomores Elliot Heinrich and Westin Hartzell round out the team roster.
Last Thursday’s match saw a close battle between the three schools in contention.
Mercyhurst Prep’s senior Hunter Farrell carded Mercyhurst’s low score with an 81 while Max Paris had McDowell’s low score of 84.
But North East would not be denied.
Isaiah Swan shot the low round of the day with a 2 under score of 70 with Hassenplug just a few strokes back with a 75 securing first and second place respectively leading the Picker team to its first victory of the year with a team score of 351.
McDowell’s 358 team score earned them a second-place finish just edging out Mercyhurst Prep (359).
