The Picker swimmers hosted their final home meet of the season on Jan. 30 where they honored the team’s 11 graduating seniors—Olivia Burek, Cody Burch, CJ Corey, Elizabeth Currier, Page Grice, Zachary Roth, Julia Sank, Frances Schoenfeldt, Anna Sveda, Maddie Watts and Garrette Whitmeyer.
After the festivities and photos, the team took on the unbeaten Fairview Tigers who stayed undefeated, winning both the boys’ and girls’ competition, though North East’s Maddie Watts took first place in diving.
The Picker boys relay team of (Kemp, M. Currier, Girts, Burch) took second place in the 200 medley and 400 free relays. The girls relay teams took third in the 200 free relay (Currier, Cass, Grice, Schoenfeldt) and the 400 free relay (Currier, Grice, Sveda, Schoenfeldt).
Other tops scores from the Fairview meet: Cody Burch (third in 50 free and 100 fly) Elizabeth Currier (second in 200 IM); Mason Currier (third in 100 breast); Grant Girts (first in 100 free, second in 50 free) Evan Kemp (first in 100 fly, second in 200 IM).
Though the Tigers came out on top, several N.E. swimmers qualified for districts in both relay and individual events.
At least half of the boys’ team has qualified this year.
An additional highlight was senior Zach Roth’s personal goal to swim the 500 free (20 lengths) in under 8 minutes. With athletes and coaches from both teams lining the pool and cheering him on, he finished in 7 minutes and 35 seconds to the thunderous applause and cheers from spectators in the stands.
NE vs. Corry
The Pickers traveled to Corry on Monday where both the boys and girls bested the Beavers (N.E. Girls 106, Corry 58; N.E. Boys 90, Corry 79).
The girls relay teams took second in the 200 medley (Lutz, Bement, Becker, Alcorn); first in the 200 free (A. Sveda, Becker, Bement, Grice), and second in the 400 free (Schoenfeldt, Cass, A. Sveda, Currier). In diving, Maddie Watts took second place and Julia Sank took third.
Top scorers on the girl’s team: Mia Becker (second in 200 IM); Lily Bement (first in 500 free, second in 100 back); Lauren Cass (first in 200 IM and 100 fly); Elizabeth Currier (first in 50 free and 100 breast); Abby Frazzini (third in 100 breast); Paige Grice (third in 100 free); Rachel Gruber (third in 200 IM and 100 back); Allison Lutz (third in 200 free and 500 free); Frances Schoenfeldt (second in 100 free and third in 50 free); Anna Sveda (first in 200 free, second in 200 IM).
The boys 200 free relay took first (Burch, Haggerty, J. Currier, Theis-Green) and third (M. Currier, Reider, Bartlett, Whitmeyer); the 200 medley teams took second (Kemp, M. Currier, Girts, Burch) and third (Lawry, Theis-Green, J. Currier, Reider); and the 400 free teams took second (Burch, Lawry, Girts, Kemp) and third (Bartlett, Reider, Whitmeyer, Haggerty).
