With eight wins and one loss this season, the North East boys swim team is enjoying the No. 2 position in Region 2 District 10 swimming, second only to the undefeated Fairview Tigers.
A rematch is coming and the Pickers are up for retribution. Mark your calendars for the next home meet – verses Fairview – on Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. to cheer the hometown team on. It’s Senior Recognition night, too.
On Jan 18, the Picker boys swam to an impressive fifth place finish out of 16 teams at the Iroquois Boys’ Invitational, including a third place overall finish in the 200-yard medley with the team of Evan Kemp, Mason Currier, Grant Girts and Cody Burch.
North East boys also took 11th place in the 200 medley, Connor Haggerty, Collin Lawry, Jackson Currier and Sklyar Theis-Green and seventh place in the 400 free relay, Girts, Lawry, Burch and Kemp.
Top individual scorers in finals at the invitational included: Burch (ninth in 50 free); J. Currier (twelfth in 100 fly); M. Currier (seventh in 100 breast); Girts (sixth in 100 fly, 12th in 100 free); Kemp (second in 200 IM and 100 Fly) and Lawry (12th in 200 IM).
North East vs Lancers
On Thursday, Jan. 16, the Pickers hosted the General McLane Lancers for the second time. The teams split the match with the North East boys winning, 114-62, and the General McLane girls beating North East, 131-55.
North East’s female divers helped the girls team score points with Maddie Watts taking first place and Julia Sank capturing third.
Top individual scorers on the girl’s side: Lily Bement (second in the 500 free); Lauren Cass (third in the 200 IM and 100 fly); Elizabeth Currier (second in 100 fly and 100 breast) and Frances Schoenfeldt (third in 200 free, 50 free).
The girls relay teams struggled with the Lancers, but took second place in the 400 relay (Schoenfeldt, Bement, Cass, Currier); third (Gruber, Currier, Cass, Schoenfeldt) and fourth (Lutz, Grice, K. Sveda, Gates) in the 200 medley, third (Lutz, Gruber, Gates, Grice) and fourth (Alcorn, Burek, Frazzini, Bement) in the 200 free relay.
The boys had another banner night with Picker swimmers taking first place in every event except the 100 free.
In the 200 medley relay, the boys won first (Kemp, M. Currier, Girts, Burch) and third place (Haggerty, Lawry, J. Currier, Bartlett). They also won first (Girts, Lawry, Burch, Kemp) and third (Reider, Fox, Bartlett, Whitmeyer) in the 200 free relay and first in the 400 free relay (Barlett, Haggerty, J. Currier, M. Currier).
The list is long for the boys’ top individual scores are: Burch (first in 50 free, third in 100 breast); J. Currier (first in 200 IM and 500 free); M. Currier (first in 100 breast, second in 200 IM); Girts (first in 100 free, second in 200 free); Kemp (first in 100 back and 200 free); Lawry (second in 100 fly and 500 free); Haggerty (second in 100 back, third in 100 free) and Garrett Whitmeyer (third in 100 fly).
