North East senior Garrett Hein converted a layup off a half court inbound pass from Carter Hassenplug with .7 seconds left in the game to put the Grape Pickers up by one point against the Girard YellowJackets on Feb. 5.
After a timeout Girard senior Ethan Getz received a great full court inbounds pass from fellow senior Austin Barrett, but the shot hit the rim but didn’t fall in.
The 57-56 Grape Pickers’ win gave them sole possession of first place in the region heading into second round play. North East is now 6-2 overall and 5-1 in region play. Girard moves to 5-4 overall and 5-2 in the region.
A fast-paced first quarter saw Girard finish the quarter up by one point at 19-18.
Barrett led the ‘Jackets with 10 points. North East saw a balanced attack with six players scoring in the quarter. The teams played the second quarter to a 13-13 deadlock as Girard went into the half up 32-31. Silas McCaslin added five of his 11 points in the second quarter. North East senior point guard Cole Lanahan had six points and converted a pair of three-point shots.
The third quarter played at a slower scoring pace and North East built a five-point lead as the game headed into the last quarter.
Girard had a strong offensive output, scoring 19 points in the fourth quarter and had built a five-point lead with 1:02 remaining in the game. A Girard turnover with under a minute gave North East a chance to fight back to be in a position to come away with the victory.
Girard’s Ethan Gimber and North East senior Seth Fuller were game high scorers with 17 points. Barrett added 16 for the YellowJackets and McCaslin added 11, converting on three, three-point baskets. Ryan Mayes and Lanahan added 14 and 11 points, respectively for the Grape Pickers.
