The North East freshman boys basketball team is now at the halfway point of its season and the boys are off to an 8-4 overall record and are 6-1 in the Erie County league standings.
The North East team consists of, Reid Courtwright, Dave Gibson, Payton Gorniak, Zac Jekel, Owen Kemp, Tom Murphy, Ethan Schmidt, Zane Strong, Trent Sweet and Tyler Wittman. They have shown continued growth and improvement since the start of the season while working on a new system this year.
In the first half of the league, they lost their first game of the season, losing to Girard by four points, beating Fairview, Corry, Harborcreek, Northwestern and Fort LeBouef to finish 6-1. Seneca and Iroquois do not have teams this year.
In between the league games, the team played in the Girard holiday tournament, going 1-2 and losing to Franklin by three points.
The team has averaged 41 points a game, while its defense is giving up 33 points a game.
The team will begin the second half of league play with a game against Girard at the North East gym on Friday, Jan. 17, at 4 p.m.
In their first game against the Yellow Jackets, the Pickers were 0-12 from the foul line and their goal will be to avenge their only loss in the league play to date.
All games are at the high school gyms and begin at 4 p.m.
The Erie County League tournament will be held at Northwestern with games scheduled for Feb. 7, 12, 13 and 15.
