The need for diapers has been identified as a problem in Erie County affecting 1 in 3 working families. Babies who remain in a soiled diapers too long are exposed to potential health risks including skin infections, open sores, urinary tract infections and other conditions that may require medical attention.
The Erie Family Center launched the free Diaper Depot diaper program in January of 2020. Since then, they have distributed more than 50,000 diapers and are serving over 350 families per month.
The 4 NINE Thrift Store has partnered with the Erie Family Center to bring a diaper depot to North East. The 4 NINE Education Center at 103 Clay St., is the site of the drive-thru distribution, scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month.
Upcoming pickup dates are: April 14, May 12, June 9 and July 14 from 3 to 5 p.m.
“Having a source for diapers will take financial stress off of a family, resulting in using those funds for other necessities,” Mary Gavacs, 4 NINE volunteer, said. “It could improve the child’s health, as regular diaper changing and a clean diaper are important for bowel and bladder health. “It will lessen the stress on the parents and improve the quality of life for the family.”
To receive a one-week supply of diapers, recipients must live in Erie County, there are no income qualifications.
To receive diapers, sign up online at eriefamilycenter.org.
Each parent/guardian will be asked to list household demographic information, guardian name and phone number and the name of the child and diaper size.
With the initial registration, each child’s birth certificate will be required.
The registration for returning diaper distribution is also online.
Anyone can support this effort by donating to the program.
“If you have diapers that a child has outgrown, they can be dropped off at the 4 NINE, during store hours,” Gavacs said. “All diapers must be clearly marked for the Diaper Depot program.”
