North East in Bloom has chosen the Catawba Drive garden of Dr. John and Carmella Almquist as the June Garden of the Month.
Being on a corner lot, the flowerbeds extend from the front around the side to the back yard, which you can see when driving by. As their kids grew up flowerbeds replaced where the swing set and the basketball court once stood. At this time, the Almquist garden has potted impatiens and begonias along with the blooming astilbe, clematis, day lilies, marigolds and hosta plants that surround the home.
North East in Bloom is a nonprofit organization formed to promote and encourage gardening, landscaping, green practices, community gateway entrances and other aesthetically pleasing enhancements throughout the community of North East.
The group chooses a Garden of the Month from spring to fall and nominates many gardens as “Bloomed.” Check out the NEIB Facebook page to see the monthly gardens and to see photos of the gardens that have been bloomed.
NEIB works with the borough and Luke’s Greenhouse to plant and maintain the parking meter baskets, memorial rose garden at Heard Park, daylily garden at Clinton and Route 20, many downtown public garden areas and the gateway signs.
Because the blooming ladies can’t be everywhere, if you feel your garden is “noteworthy” and you live in the North East Borough or Township, please send a photo and address to firstname.lastname@example.org to be reviewed.
If you are interested in gardening at any scale, please join us! NEIB meets the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at a garden of one of the members.
