North East resident Shelley Chwatek is the recipient of the Outstanding Member Award of the Community Women’s Club of North East (CWCNE). This honor, which was determined by CWCNE members, was bestowed on Chwatek during the organization’s June 24 banquet held at the Sheraton Bayfront Grille.
This recognition is annually awarded to one club member who in the opinion of the membership has “gone above and beyond the call of duty” with involvement in service projects, activities and fundraisers, as well as volunteer service outside of the club.
The object of CWCNE is to foster the ideal of service to the community and to provide its members with opportunities for the development of leadership skills and fellowships. The current president is not eligible to be nominated for this honor.
This is the third time that Chwatek has earned this award, since joining CWCNE in 1999. She was also given this recognition in 2007 and 2002.
“I am honored to be named as the Outstanding Member for the 2019-2020 CWCNE club year,” Chwatek said. “I love being a part of such an amazing group of ladies, who I call my friends. I am most proud of the community service that we do for our little ‘grape’ town! I was born and raised here, and I couldn’t imagine not being a part of this amazing hometown, with all of its blessings and ‘Picker Pride!’ Thank you!”
“Shelley has shown herself to be an individual with enthusiasm and thoughtfulness throughout this past year, especially when we all faced a different time with the pandemic,” Bonnie Daughenbaugh, CWCNE 2019-2020 president, stated. “She has continued to encourage others with her cards and handwritten notes. When service projects like our highway cleanup seemed to be a difficult task to undertake during the COVID, she did not accept defeat. She continued to rally and find a way in which to continue. I am proud to congratulate Shelley for her outstanding service this past year.”
Chwatek served as club secretary this past year, a role she has held in five previous club years and will again assume in this next club year. In the past she has also been president and a board director. This year she chaired the CWCNE committees of North East Community Fair Display, Highway Cleanup, Logbook and Sunshine. She also offered her assistance with the Diaper Bag Project, Sugar Plum Sunday Kids Crafts, Easter Baskets Project (fruit donations and baskets delivery), Creekside Park Cleanup and a club fundraiser. She presented the CWCNE Award to a graduating North East High School student during a virtual ceremony. In many of the past club years, Chwatek presented this award in person.
Outside of CWCNE, Chwatek is a North East Choral Club member, has volunteered with Special Olympics, and has been a preschool teacher. She is currently self-employed as a daycare provider. She likes to tend to her flower gardens, and sit on her porch twice a day with a cup of coffee admiring her gardens. She also enjoys reading, scrapbooking and spending time with her family. Her family members include her husband Stan and their three young adult children Stanley, Chelsey and Chloey.
